The Fossil Follies

The Fossil Follies Exhibition is an all-ages collection of paintings exploring themes of social anxiety using a cast of dinosaur archetypes inhabiting a fictional Belle Époque-era environment. The series employs the mythology of these extinct behemoths to explore the mental burden of an unspecified impending cataclysm through the mechanisms of humour and hindsight.

As a chronicler of bygone histories, Jordan Wieben’s Fossil Follies series is a collection of whimsical paleoart that draws on resonant cultural iconography -from animation to picture books- to codify familiar social anxieties in the charming sandbox of prehistoric creatures. It is informed by my experience as a costume designer, where I crafted sartorial narrative arcs from a combination of literary analysis and historic research.

Replacing the human figure with dinosaur characters reveals the absurdity of societal decorum, highlighting the discomfort of a diversity of bodies contorting themselves into conformity.
